New England-wide free bus arrival times website launched

A new website has been launched by an individual who is “on a mission to give every bus stop a real-time display”. It is called StopBoard. It functions like an app but it is does not require the user to download an app. It can be accessed through any web browser on a desktop computer or laptop, or on a tablet or smartphone.
The website provides free live bus arrival times for every bus stop in England plus scheduled timetables for stops across the other nations of Wales and Scotland. See https://stopboard.uk. The About page provides a short background on who set up the site and why.
If you go to the website on your smartphone and, provided location services are enabled on your phone, it will default to showing you bus times at the nearest bus stop to where you are at that time. If you want times at another stop, there is an option to look for “nearby stops” or you can look for stops anywhere else in Cornwall, or in fact anywhere in England, using the search function. When you use the website on your phone, you can, through normal options in the web browser, “share” the site and select the option to save it on your home screen. You will then have the icon saved that you can access at any time like an app.
The times shown at the particular bus stop are for the services of all operators calling at that stop including National Express coaches. When buses are en route to the stop, live times are shown with timer countdowns until their arrival at the stop.
This website is in many ways better than the Transport for Cornwall app. Although the TfC app’s name suggests that it covers all bus companies in Cornwall, it doesn’t. It only covers Go Cornwall Bus services, and those of Hopleys and OTS that run services under a sub-contract from Go Cornwall. Although Go Cornwall runs the overwhelming majority of bus services in Cornwall since the departure of First, there are other operators such as Stagecoach providing services in Saltash, Bude and Launceston. Stagecoach is supposed to be part of the Transport for Cornwall partnership but the Transport for Cornwall website does not include Stagecoach on its Timetables page. It does include it in the all Cornwall timetable book produced twice a year but it makes no attempt to provide any updates when timetables change, as they often do, before the next timetable book is produced, and Stagecoach service issues never appear on the Updates page of the TfC website. For example, if you wanted to catch a bus from Fore Street, Saltash, the TfC app would show you the Go Cornwall Bus services nos. 10, 11, 12 but would not show you the Stagecoach no. 2 service that runs every 20 minutes to Plymouth. It is ironic that a website produced by an unpaid individual living in Liverpool can provide information about bus times in Cornwall that is better and more comprehensive than that provided by the bus operator who has a multi-million pound contract to run bus services in Cornwall and has been given a licence to use the brand of Transport for Cornwall.
